X Turns Cashtags Into a Trading Gateway
X has turned Cashtags into a trading gateway, linking market discovery and conversation on the platform to participating brokerages and crypto exchanges.

On September 16, 2026, X launched a trading integration for Cashtags, clickable ticker symbols used on the platform to identify stocks, cryptocurrencies and other financial assets, such as $AAPL or $BTC. While Cashtags already allowed users to access market information and conversations about an asset, the new integration adds a “Trade” option.
The program launched in the U.S. with initial partners including Interactive Brokers, Moomoo, Gemini, Kraken and Coinbase. When users tap a supported Cashtag, they see the Cashtag page, displaying real-time price information and related posts. With the new “Trade” feature, X directs users to a participating brokerage or exchange, where they can sign in and place a trade. According to Kraken, this integration requires no copying between apps, while allowing users to keep their place in the X conversation they were viewing. Kraken’s blog announcement included the tagline “Scroll. Tap. Buy.”
Chief Data Officer of Payward and Global Head of Consumer at Kraken, Kamo Asatryan, said:
“People are already interested in crypto. The problem is how many steps it takes to go from hearing about an asset to owning it. Too many people give up along the way. With Cashtags on X, we’re making it possible to go from interest to ownership in just a few clicks.”
X Product Engineering lead Mridul Singhai shared the following in the X.com announcement:
“Cashtags close the gap between a ticker on the timeline and the market itself. When you post or tap a ticker, you’re taken right to the asset, where you have seamless access to the live chart, the conversation around it, and now the ability to trade with one of our brokerage partners.”
The Cashtag integration also fits within Elon Musk's longstanding ambition to expand X beyond social media and into financial services. Musk acquired Twitter, which was later renamed X, in October 2022.
In March 2023, Musk described that ambition at a Morgan Stanley conference:
“I think it’s possible to become the biggest financial institution in the world, just by providing people with convenient payment options.”
Musk expanded on that vision during an X all-hands meeting in October 2023, when he expected broader financial functionality to roll out by the end of 2024:
“If it involves money, it’ll be on our platform. Money or securities or whatever. So, it’s not just like send $20 to my friend. I’m talking about, like, you won’t need a bank account.”
In 2023, integrating broader financial services into X remained an ambition. Three years later, the Cashtag trading integration represents one concrete step in that direction, connecting market discovery and discussion on X with participating third-party execution venues.
The trades themselves are not executed by X.
