Proof-of-work Mining is SEC Resistant

On March 20, 2025, the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) released an official Statement on Certain Proof-of-Work Mining Activities, which clarifies that certain proof-of-work (PoW) mining activities do not constitute the offer and sale of securities under federal law. In this statement, PoW is defined as a "consensus mechanism that incentivizes network transaction validation by rewarding network participants, called 'miners,' who operate nodes adding computational resources to the network."

The SEC further elaborates on mining pools, where individual miners combine computational resources to enhance the likelihood of successfully mining new blocks. Despite this collaboration, each miner's expectation of profit stems from their own contributed efforts and resources, not from the managerial or entrepreneurial actions of others, such as pool operators. The SEC emphasizes that solo and pooled mining are considered administrative or ministerial activities that do not meet the criteria of an investment contract as defined by the Howey Test.

Kaspa aligns with this definition, as it utilizes a PoW consensus mechanism where miners are rewarded for validating transactions by contributing computational resources to the network. This clarification benefits US participants in the Kaspa community, affirming that their mining activities do not involve securities transactions.

Yonatan: Kaspa Community Differences Only Make the Community Stronger

On March 23, 2025, Kaspa founder Yonatan Sompolinsky published a post in which he expressed appreciation for public disagreements among prominent community figures, viewing such conflicts as a sign of a mature and diverse community. He argues that the strength of networks comes from the collaboration of individuals with differing interests and values, suggesting that rigidly cohesive communities are less likely to innovate or create valuable assets.

Reflecting on Kaspa's evolution from a closely-knit group to a more diverse entity, the author questions the emphasis on concepts like "trusting the community" and "we the community opinion." They challenge who represents the community, highlighting that individuals' roles or labels don't inherently grant them greater representation or trustworthiness.

Without taking sides in internal disputes, the author shares their positive view of Kaspa KEF, a profit-driven organization that aligns with Kaspa's interests. They note that KEF's activities, including representing miners and contributing to network security, appear beneficial. Citing Milton Friedman's perspective that systems work best when individuals act in their own self-interest, the author advocates for embracing diversity and disagreement within the community as essential for growth and innovation.

The response to his post was overwhelmingly positive, as shown in the responses below:

Luke Dunshea: A new Kaspa Node-analytics Platform

Australian Kaspa Ambassador Luke Dunshea announced that he is developing KasNodes, a comprehensive platform for Kaspa node management. Currently, in beta, the website features a dashboard, daily node rankings, network statistics, node geographic distribution, and straightforward node setup instructions. In the future, protocol metrics, snapshots, and API documentation are planned.

A distinctive aspect of KasNodes is its gamified node rankings, which allow node operators to showcase their achievements. For those less technically inclined, there's a "Buy a Node" section offering pre-configured nodes. Future enhancements include performance-oriented options for users wishing to run additional applications alongside their nodes and enterprise-grade nodes with advanced features. Interested individuals can express their interest through the Register Interest form.

Another innovative feature in development is KasMap, an interactive digital globe displaying each node's location—a modern twist on traditional pinboard maps found in coffee shops. This initiative exemplifies Kaspa's commitment to fostering a decentralized and engaged community.

Michael Sutton Announces Crescendo’s Hard Fork Date

On March 27, 2025, Kaspa core developer Michael Sutton posted that the Kaspa Mainnet Crescendo Hard Fork will occur on Monday, March 31, 2025. This is an exciting time for Kaspa, as many upgrades will make the best proof-of-work cryptocurrency even more efficient. Sutton detailed some of the major upgrades, which are noted below.

BPS increases from 1 to 10 blocks per second while maintaining roughly the same block capacity.

Throughput significantly increases, with transactions per second (TPS) rising by approximately 8-9x, enhancing Kaspa's scalability and network performance.

Frequency reduces the average block time from 1 second to 100 milliseconds, enabling near-instant transaction inclusion. This upgrade improves network responsiveness and efficiency by approximately 30%.

Block parallelism increases alongside the block rate, preventing a single miner from monopolizing each round and instead fostering competition among blocks. This enhances network efficiency, with mechanisms like oracle systems and MEV kickback auctions emerging as early use cases.

KIP-9 integrates Kaspa's unique state bloat solution directly into consensus through the "STORM" sub-protocol, optimizing storage efficiency. It also introduces UTXO storage plurality, ensuring that larger UTXOs are appropriately taxed, making the system more scalable and future-proof.

KIP-10 introduces support for basic covenants and additive addresses.

KIP-13 imposes stricter regulations on transient storage requirements, optimizing resource management for smartcontract execution.

KIP-14 introduces payloads, allowing transactions on Kaspa to carry arbitrary data, such as smart contract function calls.

KIP-15 is only one line of code but an impactful Kaspa upgrade that enables nodes to archive only transactions while proving their sequencing trustlessly. This lays the groundwork for pre-zk Layer 2 solutions by allowing cost-effective storage and proof of full smart contract execution, making preliminary SC L2s possible immediately after Crescendo.

Sompolinsky Renames Kaspa’s Smallest Unit to Dwork

On March 27, 2025, Dr. Sompolinsky posted to GitHub that the smallest Kaspa unit should be renamed to Dwork to honor the work of computer scientist Cynthia Dwork. Dwork's major indirect contribution to the work of Kaspa includes "Pricing via Processing or Combatting Junk Mail," known as the first proof-of-work model, and "Consensus in the Presence of Partial Synchrony," marking the groundwork for DAGKNIGHT's creation.
